Since I read this book in the 7 th grade, I would say it’s at a middle school reading level. She includes the time of day sometimes, and sometimes she writes poems as well. The story is written in letter format as Holly goes through her days on the road. ![]() But, the realization that she is homeless and family-less is scary and she starts to become really worried for the first time since she left. So, she makes it all the way across the country to California on her own using her resourceful and intelligent ways. Holly is an orphan and the family she is currently living with locks her in the laundry room when they don’t want to deal with her. This is not the first time she’s ran away, but it is the first time she’s escaped and not been found and brought back. (Holly is the runaway girl, who this book is obviously about). One day, Holly’s face looked at me as I pulled the book off the shelf, and I knew I needed to read this. I had braces on my teeth, I wore a back brace for my scoliosis, and my skin was not my best friend, so I spent a lot of time in the school library. ![]() Before I jump into the review, here’s a little background about how I came to find this book: I was in the 7 th grade, which was one of my least favorite years in school. Runaway by Wendelin Van Draanen! This book actually helped me stop running from my problems. ![]()
